OB-1 vs Cline
Cline is a mature Apache-2.0 agent that lives where you already work: VS Code and JetBrains, plus a CLI and an SDK, with first-class MCP support and a real enterprise tier. OB-1 is terminal-first, built around inspectable project memory and hosted credits that are capped in advance rather than metered as you go.
Choose OB-1 when you want a terminal-first agent with durable, inspectable memory and a hosted option whose spend is fixed before you start, not billed after you finish.
Choose Cline when you want an editor-native agent with deep IDE integration, broad MCP tooling, and an enterprise tier offering SSO, SCIM, audit logging, and VPC deployment.
| Question | OB-1 | Cline |
|---|---|---|
| Primary surface | Terminal-first CLI you pair with any editor | VS Code and JetBrains extensions, plus a CLI, SDK, and web app — a genuine strength |
| License posture | Apache-2.0 CLI | Apache-2.0 |
| No-key start | Yes, built-in free-model router | Cline's own provider advertises free options; otherwise bring a provider key |
| Paid options | Prepaid hosted credits at $9, $49, or $99 a month | ClinePass at $9.99/mo for open-weight models, usage-based credits through the Cline provider, or pay your chosen providers directly |
| Spend shape | Prepaid and hard-capped — when the month's credits are gone, hosted requests stop; there is no overage path | Usage-based routes bill for what you consume; ClinePass is a flat subscription with open-weight quotas |
| Provider choice | Built-in free router, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, vLLM, Groq, Gemini, custom | Nine or more providers, including any OpenAI-compatible API, Ollama, and LM Studio |
| Memory | Inspectable local memory graph | Session and project context inside the editor |
| Enterprise controls | Not a current focus | SSO, OIDC/SCIM, role-based access, audit logging, and VPC deployment on a custom-priced plan |
Practical read
- Cline is not a bring-your-own-key-only tool: alongside BYOK it sells ClinePass at $9.99 a month and meters usage through its own provider, so 'OB-1 is cheaper' is not automatically true — compare against the route you would actually use.
- The budgeting difference is the honest one: OB-1's hosted plans are prepaid and hard-capped, while BYOK and usage-based routes bill for whatever you consume.
- Cline's IDE integration and enterprise controls are real advantages. OB-1 keeps a smaller terminal surface and bets on portable memory instead.
